Messing About in Boats, Boots, and Byways:

Archive of Erie Canal Journal entries for 2002: 08 September 02 -- pix

The first time we saw Pecker was fall 2001 when we were taking out the skiff near Holley. The boat came by, and the captain's wife, taking her ease on the roof, shouted out to us in teasing and friendly tones, "Mine's bigger than yours!" We saw Pecker a few weeks later moored near Brockport on the canal. We have a special affection for the boat, because we at first thought that the mural image was of a penguin, and Tux the penguin is the Linux operating system mascot, and because the Reverend would love it if I built us a pontoon party boat. Pecker has the look of a house trailer recycled for the water. It's a fun craft to encounter.
