Keep your Guard up

    09 August 02: Dam structures called Gaurd Gates are raised in summer and are lowered in winter when the Erie Canal is drained.

Our favorite section of the canal, from Lockport to Brockport, has several Guard Gates, which can be raised for the boating season and lowered to isolate sections in case of breaks or other disasters. This one is near Gasport.
