In the Garden: -- Our Garlic Farm

27 February 04: Ok, I agree that calling my garlic patch a farm stretches the meaning of the word, but there was a time not too many years ago that gourmet garlic growers topped out at a few acres total.

Any more, garlic growers (and I'm not talking about Gilroy garlic) are sprouting up in many places.

I grow enough garlic for our needs with a bit still left over to give to friends in hopes that they will try growing their own garlic, too.

The photos below follow the growth of the 2002 crop

April 23, 2002: Garlic shoots are about a foot tall.

22 May 02: Garlic shoots about 18 inches tall.
11 June 02: Volunteer garlic next to the house is 2 feet tall.
27 June 02: Top (called the scape) is curling.
08 July 02: The scapes are begining to straighten up.
23 July 02: The crop is in the basement, bundled by type and labeled.  In mid-October, the cycle begins again with planting.
