Big
Red breaks the ice
06
February 03: On
the way to church today I noticed that there was still a lot
of ice floes from the break in the Ice Boom on Lake Erie a few
days ago. I stopped on the way back home and was lucky to time
my stop with the passage of a big, red Buffalo Fire Boat that
was moving at a good clip upstream. The boat pulled in at the
boat launch nearby and went back and forth parallel with the
launch slope, and I couldn't figure out what it was doing. On
the 11 p.m. news on Channel 2, there was some footage of the
Cotter
breaking ice in the Inner Harbor, and I figure that the Breaker
was doing the same at the launch ramp. There is ice above Strawberry
Island and below, almost an ice bridge below. I haven't seen
it like this in the 10 years I've been in Buffalo.

Buffalo
Fire Boat moves upstream past Strawberry Island, about
five minutes from our house. Ice floes in the background
escaped aftr the Ice Boom on Lake Erie broke is several
places a few days ago during high winds. |

A
little further upstream. Pic shows the ice buildup above
Strawberry Island.

I
couldn't figure out why the boat was going back and forth
just a few feet from the shore. I figure that this was
to keep the ice from getting too thick at the launch ramp. |
