03 January 04

Bleak midwinter turns a toasty 56

03 January 04: Bleak, yes, but also balmy. That was the story today on Goat Island overlooking the falls of Niagara -- ours and theirs, U.S. and Canadian.

It was a good day for walking about, with light jackets, no gloves, and a big smile. A persistent mist, with overcast skies, kept things from being totally bizarre for January in Buffalo/Niagara Falls. We topped out at 56 degrees, though. The forecast calls for snow and temps in the teens by Wednesday of next week.

    That's more like.

It was a day of contrasts, with sharpness on one side and blurred-ness on the Canadian side of the gorge below Horseshoe Falls.

Make up your own caption for this one; I don't have a clue about what they are doing.
Hotel on the Canadian side stands up to its blowholes in mist.
Trickle on the Canadian side joins the mighty Niagara below Horseshoe Falls.
Sometimes I please myself. I really like the strong but wispy diagonal lines against the sharper angles of the highrise buildings on the Canadian side. And the folk in the foreground seem almost in a separate reality.
I was so taken by the mist that the falls for once took a back seat. This is Horseshoe Falls.
The Reverend gives a graceful contrast to the misty Bridal Veil Falls.
... and to a various run of snow fencing, too.
One gull decided to sun itself on a wet rock on the channel above International Falls.
I've decided that his name is Fred. I won't tell you how I know that Fred is a he.
Shape in the mist take on romantic edges above International Falls.
