Ice is nice, but enough is enough

16 March 03: We decided to see if a few months had made much difference in the Ice Bridge below Niagara Falls and to the situation on Goat Island.

The Ice Bridge, though still dramatic, was less in evidence at the foot of the falls on the American side, and the piles of snow on Goat Island were towering far over our heads. One stroller was sitting on a bench, though the snow was level with the seat.

It was another warm day, and even warmer than yesterday. The sky was even more blue, too. Lots and lots of people had the same idea as we did. It was a good day to be out and about.

Stroller on Goat Island takes a seat on top of a park bench embedded in snow up to the seat slats.
First, an overview of the upper end of the Ice Bridge, showing a lot more open water right below the falls on the American side.
Second, a closer view of the pinkish ice walls of the caldron effect in the foreground and the ice tower that almost equals the height of the falls behind.
Third, a view celebrating the contrast of snow, sky, water, ice, and geometric shapes of snow fence and guide rails. And a rainbow that is kissing the Rainbow Bridge in the far background.
We also drove down the Gorge road a mile or two from downtown to see the whirlpool at Whirpool State Park. While we were there, tourists glided by in their gondola.
